ADEQUATE YEARLY PROGRESS - AYP

The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was signed into law by President Bush in January of 2002.  The major goal of the act is for all students to meet or exceed state standards in reading and mathematics by 2014.  Each year, the state will calculate a school and district’s Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) to determine if students are meeting the established annual targets based upon the following:  the percent of reading and math scores that meet or exceed standards; participation rate of students taking the tests, which must meet or exceed 95%; attendance rates for elementary and middle school students; and graduation rates at the high school level.  The tests utilized to determine AYP are the ISAT and PSAE administered in the spring of each year.  All students and subgroups of 45 or more within individual school buildings, as well as the district, are calculated for AYP.  The subgroups include:  Racial/Ethnic, Economically Disadvantaged, Students with Disabilities and Limited English Proficient Students.

Status for AYP for District 140

AYP for 2003:  Each individual building met AYP.  However, on a district-wide basis when all students are counted together, we did not meet AYP in three areas:  percent of students tested in the economically disadvantaged subgroup was less than 95%, and the percent of students with disabilities meeting or exceeding state standards was less than the required 37% in the areas of reading and mathematics.

AYP for 2004:  Each individual building met AYP, but the district did not in one area when all students are counted together:  32.5% of our students with disabilities met or exceeded state standards in mathematics; the requirement for meeting AYP in 2004 was 40%

AYP for 2005:  Each individual building met AYP, but the district did not in one area when all students are counted together:  32.8% of our students with disabilities met or exceeded state standards in reading; the requirement for meeting AYP in 2005 was 47.5%.

AYP for 2006:  As a school district we met AYP.  However, our state improvement status remains “Academic Early Warning” because it takes two consecutive years before a district is removed from status.  All schools in our district met AYP targets when all students are included.  However, Eureka Middle School did not meet AYP in the area of reading for students with disabilities.

The reading and math score targets were 47.5% for 2006.  This year (2007) the targets increase to 55%.

The district has developed and implemented a district improvement plan to address school improvement issues.
